Should PhaseWalker's use of the Phase ability cost them food? I feel like this is a required balance feature. I don't entirely know what the cost should be yet though, here are some ideas:

  1. Duration
With this, the PhaseWalker would consume 1 full ham shank every 20 seconds while phased.
  2. On-action
With this, the PhaseWalker would consume a determined amount of ham shanks when they use their ability. If they are in a group, more ham shanks will be consumed per amount of persons Phased.
If this is the one we go with:
If the ability consumes more food than the PhaseWalker has, should the PhaseWalker die or should the ability fail to activate?
  3. None
Of course, it might be a stupid idea all together.

Well, that is a very tricky question. I'm sure that he would think that there's no problem just going around invisible to other players and not being able to interact with anything. Though he uses his ability so god damn often, that it makes sense to make him not do that. I think that if anything, we should make it a duration thing so then he wouldn't just phase around the map. Doing this however, gets rid of it's appeal slightly, but it does make it less annoying for both combat and generally going around the map. Ideally, I would want a little bar kinda like sombra's old invisibility or something at the bottom but if we want to do hamshanks then go for it.

That's a good idea.

We could also give it a cooldown or a duration.

I think the cooldown would be more annoying, but more useful in terms of balance. It would stop him from spamming during combat, which I do actually enjoy watching. It would be the more useful of the two options I think; because it would stop the spam. The cooldown could be shown as a bossbar on the top of his screen, or the level bar could be modified to show cooldown while it's moving down, or we could show the cooldown action thing on his hotbar when he activates the ability.

The duration option would allow him to activate the ability whenever he likes, but it would only last a set duration each time. However, with this, he would still be able to spam the ability. Though now that I think about it, this would cause issues, as he could circumvent the cooldown by cancelling and reactivating the ability before it ends, or just reactivate it immediately after it ends.

I still think there should be a cost to using the ability, however, a counter-argument can be made. The abilities are what makes each species special, and you would think that a species is very easily able to use their abilities, and within reason without cost.

For instance, you might expect the Ender people to be able to use Teleport as frequently as they please, and without cost, because that's what they do. But, because this is supposed to be fun, I think that there does need to be a balance in these abilities. People did complain about my teleporting too much, as an example. I like the idea of over-use of abilities causing wear on the user and being potentially deadly.

I thought about making it deadly as well. In the case for landon however, I thought of if he did it too much, he might not be able to come back from the other realm. You see though, this isn’t ideal since then he would actually be boned, but if we wanted to give it a deadly edge, there’s a thought.

For the cooldown, a cooldown and duration would be mandatory. How we do this could be a few things, one of which being focused directly on the boss bar for example. When it’s filled, he’s able to phase until that bar is empty, but he can not phase again until that bar fills. It’s a very simple hourglass mechanic but it’s versatile in use. Another could simply based off of hunger, either having it drain while he’s using it or take a set amount of ham-shanks.

Side note- should our powers increase over time? Or stay how they are all the time with some exceptions (special events, things of that nature). I do like the idea of having an event where we are all in the phase realm at some point for whatever reason or one of us doing something crazy with one of our abilities one time.

It would probably not be a good idea to force him to stay in the Phase plane, unless we had another world for it. If we had a replica world based on the normal world, we could send him there where he could interact with it. Otherwise, I think after realising he’s stuck he’d just leave and rub my arm until we fixed it. Though, our current PhaseWalker is more into the roleplay than the others, he may go for it for a short time, so it think it could be a neat event which happens once, which can use to show him the dangers of too much phasing. Sort of like whacking a puppy for eating your shoe. It would have to be done quickly, but I have a few ideas on how it could work. We might activate it while he’s fighting someone and constantly phasing, and just take him out of the fight. Both parties might confused, but this is ok. We’ll go in there and cut everything off from Landon, and then lead him somewhere to do something to get him or, or have other players create some sort of device that’s big and grand that will pull him out. Some giant sculpture made of Nether quartz with a beacon in the middle. We’ll have him stand on the beacon and a player not phased will throw a Nether Star onto the beacon and have some neat particle effects and then unphase him. This, we could do with command blocks. As for getting the players to come together and do this, we could write some books and liter them around, but keep them away. When they’re like “oh no, what do we do?” you can come up and be like “hey, I found this books in a dungeon a while ago, they seem to explain exactly what’s happening here.” and toss ‘em over.

I quite like the idea of using a boss bar as a mana bar. That could be really neat, but it might suffer when there are actual bosses around. However, I do know that spawning multiple bosses will create multiple bars, so it may in fact be possible to create a separate bar for his mana and still show regular boss bars. I believe there can only be seven boss bars at a time, and normally I would be against something I’m not sure of, but I think it would be ok. The only way the mana bar would be hidden is if there are 7 bosses, and anyone who spawns more than 1 wither at a time has a death wish anyway. If we do implement this, I would like to look into a way of guaranteeing that the boss bar is always seen, though that will likely be a polish feature done much later on in the server’s life.

Side Note: I don’t think the powers should increase over time. I’m not entirely sure how we’d even do something like that. We could make a system similar to Slime Fun, where players have to research their abilities. Perhaps we can integrate that into the story, by creating books which the player can find and read to gain knowledge on their species. I do like the idea of having some super-powers at some points, but those should be rare and special. And, as it currently stands, we can all enter the Phase Plane via Landon, but I’m not sure if that’s exactly what you meant by that.

The phaserealm event sounds rad. Getting it to go as planned may be annoying though. It would probably be better if one of them “found” the ridiculously convenient book rather than one of the likely culprits of coding witchcraft. Perhaps Icarus could help? Surprise tool in a chest that could help us later?

I really don’t think the bosses should be an issue. It’s very rare to come across one in the first place since really it’s just the wither. Then in regards to the bar itself, having it up all the time sounds easy enough I would imagine, not sure why only having it show up temporarily would be harder. Either way, both methods work fine so it doesn’t matter all that much. If only we could have neat items or something unique to use our abilities instead of objects like dye. Though, it would probably be much more rad if we didn’t need an object at all, or just held an object with no texture (is an unbreakable tool with 1 durability with no texture a thing that can happen? Or do you actually have to have something exist? I remember being able to do that shit with older texture pack creators and just have things not exist)

I mostly ment in regards to you wanting to have more things at one point. It seems a bit much for someone who just kinda showed up. I don’t think that races should have too many things either. The only ones that would I guess consist of races that would make stuff out of ice or literally Poseidon himself. In those regards though, they of course have strict counters/conditions. The main thing that I would imagine changing to be very powerful are things like 1 offs. Like with the phase realm, landon can just bring us all there indefinitely currently, but later on he won’t be able to. Or have an event where you teleport everyone to another new dimension or whatever or adrian turning into a retextured dragon or some shit.

I think that if they do find the book, they should find it well before the event happens, or it would be too convenient. So get writing on that pretty quick and put it somewhere, Logan will probably find it first. I don't know exactly what this would require, but we'd probably need to outline exactly how PhaseWalkers would work and make sure we have all our bases covered.

I haven't actually ever used the Bossbar API, so I don't know how it would actually work. All I know is that it can be done.

I think we can have an object with no texture, but I don't know what it would be or how it would be done. I think it would also make the item preview invisible, and it would have to be an object with durability that we can reskin, and I'm not sure how many item we have like that.

I want everything to have at least one hard counter, either by method or by species specifically. But other than that, I don't know how what we'll do. Can't retexture dragons. We will allow people to do something special to save the day at least for each species, just to show them that they're cool and our server is cool.

We might also look into him phasing multiple people consuming certain amounts of hunger.

something like 1h * p / 30s

Adrian suggested this: if you stay in the Phase realm too long, you start to deteriorate.

We could do something like that were after a while he gets nausea, then a while hunger, then, poison, then slowness and blindness, and finally he's just gone completely. He could either be trapped in the Phase realm forever, or he could die normally. If he dies while phased, all of his stuff will be completely gone.

Perhaps when he phased, it should cost him a full shank of hunger for each person he phases. This would be a simple yet effective way of limiting his phasing ability.
